5TH ELEMENT COLLECTIVE · A 5-WEEK JOURNEY FOR COUPLES & CO-FOUNDERS
relationships as living systems
transform conflict to connection
Friction is not the problem. It is part of every living relationship. What wears a partnership down is what happens next — the automated reactions that fire before you choose them.
A training for high-functioning couples and co-founders: learn to stay with discomfort, interrupt the old pattern, and respond in ways that nourish connection — to yourself, to each other, and to the life you are building together.

The same fight. The same silence. The same distance.
Friction shows up the way it always does: the argument that repeats with different content. The conversation that always ends in the same corner. The talk you both avoid. The synergy and closeness that has quietly turned into distance, numbness, shutdown.
And because discomfort is hard to stay with, we reach for what removes it — anger, resentment, blame, withdrawal. Or the quieter exits: the drink, the scroll, the work, the sleep, the over-functioning.
These are automated responses to discomfort. They are strategies your system uses to numb when the nervous system is activated and your system wants to protect you by fighting, fleeing, freezing or fawning.
They are not evidence of your identity. They are just compulsive coping mechanisms designed to get you into safety fast.
But. There is another way. It is called: STAY.
a new view: your relationship is a living system
A relationship is not a machine with a fault to locate and repair. It is a living system — two nervous systems meeting, and a third thing emerging between them.
In a living system, patterns are co-created. The loop you keep landing in is not one person's fault; it is something the system does. That distinction changes everything: it ends the search for who is broken, and begins the work of seeing what the system needs.
When you can see the system, you are no longer inside the reaction. You gain space — and in that space, choice.
what you'll learn
✦ You'll learn to recognize friction and discomfort as signals — information for the relationship, not threats to it.
✦ You'll map the patterns that keep you looping in conflict and distance, and see them as systemic — not personal defects.
✦ You'll notice and interrupt the coping loops — anger, resentment, withdrawal, drink, scroll, work, sleep — as they fire.
✦ You'll practice new responses that nurture connection instead of numbing or exploding — deeper connection to yourself, to each other, and to the larger system you are both part of.
✦ You'll build shared language and tools you can return to whenever tension rises.
who this is for
- High-functioning couples and co-founders
- Your relationship works, and you want it to work at the level everything else in your partnership does
- You see the loops: recurring arguments, quiet withdrawal, reaching for the phone or for work
- You’d rather train new responses than repeat old patterns
- You want a non-pathologizing, complexity-aware way of working with conflict
- You don’t want a framework that treats one of you as “the problem”
- You’re willing to meet what arises with curiosity and responsibility instead of blame
- You treat your partnership like your craft: something worth deliberate practice
the arc of your five weeks couple's training
Week 1 · Meeting Friction – My Living System
Understanding discomfort at its root. You learn to read your own system — body sensations, thoughts, emotions — and to recognize the moment friction becomes reaction.
Week 2 · Mapping Your Patterns – From Reaction to Choice
You map your coping strategies — the exits, the escalations — and practice interrupting them as they fire. Choice replaces automation.
Week 3 · Seeing Your Relationship as a Living System
Two systems meet and a third is born: the emergent we. Connection, communication, trust, agreements — you learn how your shared system works, and how friction between you becomes information.
Week 4 · Practicing New, Nurturing Responses – Together
You practice staying with discomfort together — regulating, repairing, and letting conflict deepen trust instead of eroding it.
Week 5 · In Service of Life – Your Living Compass
How are you being in service of (our) life — the relationship, the business, the community, the world around you? You close by co-creating your Living Compass: a living orientation you return to whenever tension rises.
why I teach this
I am Lucy Vittrup Christensen,
an executive coach and founder therapist, founder of 5th Element Collective. I am an best-selling author, TEDx speaker and intimacy expert.
But more importantly: for twenty-five years I have worked with founders, executives, and public figures from Copenhagen to Manhattan to Colombo to Madrid— people who perform at the highest level everywhere on the outside but still struggle in their most important relationships on the inside.
What I teach here I did not learn in a clinic. I have been in relationships where friction ran the show, and I knew every exit — the blame, the withdrawal, the work, the numbing.
Every exit cost me the connection I was trying to protect. The turning point was a radical decision, repeated daily for years: to stop leaving and stay instead. Stay with and go through the discomfort instead of trying to bypass it.
It was the hardest work I have ever done — and it gave me the most connected relationship I have ever had. The friction did not disappear; it became the doorway. That is what I pass on now: not a theory, but a path I have walked, made teachable for you and your partnerships.

Questions, answered
Do we need to have serious problems for this to be worth it?
No — the opposite. This is a training, not crisis care. It is built for partnerships that already function well and want to train how they handle friction, the way you would train any capacity that matters. If you are in acute crisis, contact Lucy for professional 1:1 support first; this material will still be here.
Do we both need to attend, or can one of us start?
Yes! However, the course is designed for two — one enrollment covers both of you. That said, systems change when any part of them changes. If your partner isn't ready, you can begin with your own patterns; the relationship will feel the difference.
How is this different from couples therapy?
Therapy often is based on analysis and cognitive understanding. It can over focus on past events to map dysfunctional relating; this work looks at the living system as it is now — the loops, the reactions, the exits — and trains new responses in practice. It is educational and experiential, not clinical treatment, and it does not treat either of you as a patient.
How long do we have access to the material?
Lifetime access, for both of you. Living systems change slowly and then all at once — you can return to the material whenever the system needs it.
What if our schedule is full?
The material is self-paced. Every practice is designed for real life — short enough to survive a founder's calendar, real enough to change what happens at the dinner table.
Do we need prior experience with systems thinking?
None. You need only what you already have: a relationship with friction in it, and the willingness to train.
